What’s in a name? And when does a business know when it’s time to change its name? After ten years of hard work to evolve and change the company culture to one of collaboration and leadership; improve operational processes to focus on service, speed, precision, and quality; and welcome challenging, complex projects from our most innovative customers; there is no question in my mind that now is the perfect time to change our company name and build a new brand that reflects this decade of work.
So, J&J Machine Company is now Bristol Precision™.
Bristol Precision draws inspiration from the nautical term “shipshape and Bristol condition,” a phrase that means sturdy, shipshape, and ready for any challenge the sea has to offer. We think this name perfectly reflects the organization that we have become. I’m a long-time sailor and have a personal affinity for Bristol, Rhode Island. I know how precision, teamwork, and focus on technology are important in both sailing and in the vision we’ve created for our machine shop. So the name Bristol Precision has deep and personal meaning for me, and now the whole team, at our company. If you look closely at our new logo and the website, you’ll notice both machining and nautical references: precision in the logo style, and colors that evoke sailing and the sea. You’ll also notice a focus on team: the photos on our website are not stock photos – they are the actual team members who make Bristol Precision the company it is.

Ten years ago, I fulfilled the dream of owning a company and acquired J&J Machine. Since then, my team and I have worked continually towards the vision of becoming New England’s #1 prototype CNC machine shop. We upgraded and expanded our staff by attracting professional and highly skilled machinists and managers. We made significant investments in new CNC and metrology equipment, replacing aging, unreliable machines with more advanced and precise tools. Our upgrades included replacing old lathes with mill/turn equipment, adding 5-axis capabilities, incorporating larger mills to handle sizable plates, and integrating a fully programmable CMM. Alongside these enhancements, we provided our team with the necessary training to maximize efficiency and fully leverage these new technologies. We obtained ISO, 13485 and AS9100 certifications and became ITAR registered to ensure that we meet the highest standards for the industries we serve. We developed a network of the most trusted vendors allowing us to provide complete development and manufacturing lifecycle services to our customers. We implemented state-of-the-art shop-floor software that increases our efficiency and allows for the highest level of precision prototyping. And we cultivated a customer base that demands complex prototype and low-volume production parts.
As we transitioned from a mom-and-pop shop into a professional organization, we felt that the old J&J name no longer reflected the company that we have become.
The company name, branding, website, and email addresses have changed. Although the basics have remained the same (company ownership, staff, location, DUNS number, D&B code, phone numbers) our team, processes, equipment, quality assurance standards, and customer base have grown, innovated, and evolved. Our commitment to precision and customer service is unwavering, and we’re excited to continue on this exciting voyage.
